The Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has described as ‘great’ the comments made by the president, Nana Akufo-Addo on homosexuality.

President Nana Akufo-Addo told Aljazeera that legalisation of homosexuality is bound to happen in Ghana if public opinion for its legalisation grows stronger.

“I don’t believe that in Ghana, so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say: ‘Change it [the law], let’s then have a new paradigm in Ghana."

“I think it is something that is bound to happen like elsewhere in the world, they are activities of individuals of groups”, he said.

Nana Akufo-Addo’s comments have, however, not gone down well with many Ghanaians, including some pressure groups and religious organisations, who feel that his comments suggest an endorsement of homosexuality.

But speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, Mr Ablakwa explained that Nana Akufo-Addo at the point had to make a choice between making comments that would please the international community and statements that would offend his conservative society back home.

The North Tongu MP said the president chose to please the international community; a choice which he [Ablakwa] believes was ideal at the time.

“The President was aware of the implications of whatever answer he was about offering and hence I believe he will be pleased with the consequences he is receiving back home…,” he said.

“Nana Addo did not want to incur the wrath of gay community…the President was trying to be in the middle…but the consequence is that back home, the President has not impressed the conservative Ghanaian community,” Ablakwa added.

Meanwhile, the government has said that it does not intend legalizing homosexuality in Ghana.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, the Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid said that homosexuality is still unacceptable in Ghana as there is no “cultural orientation” that supports it.
